Trust in the Power of Positivity.  I've got some suggestions on how to stay positive and reduce the negative.  Some may not be for you, but you may find something you can work with.

Hey!  Thanks for listening!  I’m Chris Wagenti, and this is Who Gets It, Naturally.  Music was composed and performed by V. Karaitis.    I’m not selling anything, diagnosing anything; offering any cures or replacing your doctor.  I’m just sharing my passion for natural products.  If you’re pregnant, please consult your doctor before trying anything new.  Everyone is different so you may need to tweak the recipes a bit to work for you.  Always start with the least amount of essential oils…you can always add, you can’t take away.  Remember, these remedies don’t last forever, you need to reapply as needed.  If you are allergic to any of the ingredients I use, please substitute for something you’re not allergic to.  Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean you can’t be allergic to it.

OK, there’s a lot going on, and the holidays are coming…this time of year can be really stressful.  So, I want to talk more about staying positive.  If you believe in the Law of Attraction, basically, you get what you think.  Meaning, if you think negatively, I can’t; I won’t; I don’t, etc; that’s exactly what you’ll get.  But, on the flip side, if you think, I can; I will; I do; positive things will happen.  I tend to lean this way…I’ve seen it many times.  One example is my sister.  If you listened to my 50th Episode, you understand.  She survived a brain hemorrhage and still keeps going.  Yes, we laugh in the face of adversity, but it’s better than crying.  Don’t get me wrong, a good cry every now and then is a great release for me.  But in daily life, laughing gets me through.  Laughing at yourself is probably one of the best things you can do…it’s uplifting, not just for yourself, but for other people too.  For instance, a few weeks ago we were working in the office.  I was on my way back to my desk from the Ladies’ Room.  Mid-stride my leg just stopped.  Luckily, I was only about 5 feet from my desk and right next to a wall.  I leaned into it and just started laughing.  I had all the other girls laughing as well, and they had no idea why.  They say my laugh is contagious.  When I finally stopped laughing enough to talk, I told them what happened.  They stopped laughing enough to say, “oh my God, are you ok?”.  I was still giggling about it, and reassured them I was fine.  This wasn’t the first time that happened, and I’m sure it wasn’t the last.  It was a nice laugh break, and lightened the mood in the whole office.  My boss even heard me laugh and came out of her office asking what was so funny.  Now, if I would have yelled “Owwww” or gasped or something like that, the whole mood of the office would have been different…there would have been worry and concern (not that they weren’t concerned, but it wasn’t a dark and heavy concern).

I think of negativity like a dark, humid cloud that smothers the surroundings.  It’s stifling and restrictive.  Positivity is light, airy, comfortable and healing.  Now, that doesn’t mean “NO” should never come out of your mouth.  “No” is actually a positive when you are stopping someone from infringing on your boundaries.  For instance, if someone asks you to do something you’re not comfortable doing, you have every right turning them down, politely.  This isn’t negative, it’s protecting your morals, your sanity, your time.  I’m not saying don’t help anyone, I’m saying know your limits, and protect them.

Negativity can be passively mentioned.  Now stay with me on this… walking can be an issue for me.  While I’m home, I’m pretty much ok.  Ok, so I waddle more than I walk.  There are times when I’m so sore I do need my cane to get around, but luckily, those instances are few and far between.  I do use my cane at work, because I do have farther distances to walk.  When I do have a decent amount of walking to do, I use the cane.  Ironically, walking is probably the best thing I can do for my hips.  Standing still is possible for only about 5 minutes, then I need to sit.  If I stand in the wrong position too long, like, when I’m doing the dishes, my hip locks.  Trying to move once that happens is not pretty.  If I don’t move in the right direction, my hip pops, and it’s very painful.  Election Day was coming up and I was trying to figure out how to bring my folding chair so I could sit in line when I needed to.  I was talking to one of the girls at work, and Halloween came up.  Last year she came to work as an old lady…she looked awesome, with her hair a mess wearing pajamas and a robe, and she used her mom’s old seat walker.  The lightbulb in my head went off & I asked how much that was.  It was out of my price range, but it was all tricked out…animal print, cup holders, etc.  So I did my research and found one in my price range that folds, has a pouch under the seat and is lightweight.  I thought, perfect!  It fits in the trunk of my car and is light enough for me to lift in and out.  Now I can go to the mall, or a museum, the park, and not have to worry about what I was going to do when my hips decided they needed a break.  I’ve got a seat where ever I am!  So now, I can spend more time walking, which will hopefully in turn help stretch the muscles in my hips and relax them a bit and maybe ease up on some of the pain.  When I get a little achy, I can sit, rest and get up and walk some more.  I was actually very excited about this.

I was texting with a friend in Florida.  I told her about the seat walker and her response was, “Sorry you’re at the point where you need that”.  This actually took me back.  I thought, how negative.  Now, she’s a very good friend, and meant no ill will, it was more concern, and I get that.  But I was still, yeah, kinda shocked.  I don’t see it as “needing” the walker.  I see it as using the walker as a tool to improve.  It was great on Election Day.  Usually, I’m so sore after voting because I stood so long, and probably locked my hip a few times just standing, which is totally exhausting.  This time, I sat in line a few times when the line stopped moving, and I was able to sit while I filled out my ballot (yes, it’s a paper ballot we have to color in the boxes for who we are voting for, then feed it into a scanner).  Going to the mall is no longer daunting.  I don’t have to worry about not finding a handicapped parking space.  I can park the car and sit in the lot if I have to take a break.  I don’t have to worry about my hip yelling at me by the time I get inside the mall.  I have to admit, this has stopped me from doing many things.  But now, I can go wherever and know I have a way to rest when I need to.  And I’m not self-conscious enough to care about what anybody thinks when they see me walking with the walker.  Gotta do what ya gotta do! This is the difference between positive thinking and negative thinking.  Even if the negative was projected out of concern, it’s negative.  I just let it roll.  Again, I don’t NEED the walker, I’m USING it as a tool.

Negativity isn’t just a state of mind, it can adversely affect all aspects of your life; mentally, physically and emotionally.  Like stress, it can adversely affect your health.  Mentally, and emotionally, it can move you into depression.

How do you shield yourself with so much negativity floating around?  There’s lots of things you can do.

Mentally

Recite positive affirmations.  Which ones?  That depends on you.  Just like with Essential Oils, you have to find what’s right for you…everyone is different.

Learn how to look at things in a positive way.  Sounds kind of cliché, but, when one door closes another door opens; every cloud has a silver lining; everything happens for a reason.  Embrace this.  I don’t need a seat walker to walk around, I’m using one as a tool to improve. Everything in life can be spun as either negative or positive.  Train yourself to see the positive.  It’ll take some effort at first, but it will become the rule, not the exception.

Meditate.  Meditation calms the mind.  It’s kind of a re-set.  I have talked about meditating before.  Find a quiet place, sit comfortably with your hands resting on your knees, palms up, or lay down, close your eyes, and breathe deeply.  If a thought pops into your head, put it in a bubble and let it float away.  You’ll know when to stop.

Physically

Crystals.  Back in the late 90’s, early 2000’s, hematite was big.  Rings, bracelets, charms.  Even just shapes to keep on your desk.  Hematite is said to absorb negativity.  I have seen many rings/pieces of hematite absorb so much negativity they shattered.  Other crystals used to clear negativity are selenite, ruby, quartz, amethyst, carnelian, tourmaline, just to name a few.  Don’t just pick any piece, find your piece.  It will call out to you.  If you’re still not sure, hold a piece in your hand, close your eyes and relax.  If it resonates with you, it’s yours.  By this, I mean, you get a tingling, or your hand gets warm…you’ll know it when you experience it.  Keep it on your desk at work, or under your bed, or in your car.  Where ever you experience the most negativity.  Find a couple of pieces that resonate with you, and place them where needed.

Spend time outdoors.  Go to a park; play on the swings; jump into a pile of leaves.  Fresh air, sunshine and doing things you loved as a kid all help improve your mood and help center you, help you stay positive.

Singing Bowls.  There are small, bronze bowls known as Tibetan Singing bowls, and there are larger bowls made from crystals.  I have a smaller Tibetan Singing Bowl.  The vibrations are said to cleanse negative energy.  The bowl comes with a small wood piece that is solid and cylindrical, looks sort of like a club.  You tap the side of the bowl with the club, then rub the club along the rim of the bowl to make it sing.

Burn Sage.  This is also called smudging. Sage bunches are available at metaphysical stores.  You burn them to clear negativity.  You can also burn incense.  Which scents?  Now we’re crossing over into Essential Oils, and mixing into aromatherapy.  Use either incense or essential oils made with Frankincense, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Basil, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Tea Tree and Chamomile to name a few.  Notice that Basil and Rosemary are in the Mint Family.  You can also use Peppermint, Spearmint and Oregano.  You may not be able to burn incense at your desk in the office, but maybe you can diffuse some Essential Oils.  Use scent sticks in the car.

Listen to Music.  Music is uplifting.  You can’t help but tap your foot to the beat.  Practice air guitar.  In the car, you can play air drums on the steering wheel.  Ain’t That A Shame by Cheap Trick is one that you absolutely have to play air drums to, no matter where you are, every time you hear it! Well, I do… but then again, I howl at the full moon every time I see it, too.

Emotionally

Gratitude.  Make a list of things you’re grateful for.

Don’t let what other people think or say affect you.  Face the fact that not everyone is going to like you, and that is ok.  Other peoples’ opinions are just that, theirs.  Your world does not revolve around them, so their thoughts have no bearing on your life.  Their words and thoughts can’t hurt you unless you let them.  Then that’s on you, not them.  If you’re having a bad day, own it.  No one is perfect.  You’re entitled to be off a day or so here and there.

Most importantly, learn how to laugh, especially at yourself.  It’s good for the soul!

These are just a few suggestions.  They won’t all work for you.  Are there other things to try?  Absolutely.  These are the things I have done, or currently do to stay positive.  Do your research and experiment to find what works for you.
